Review
There’s been hype surrounding this novella, which made me interested in it despite not being much into necromancy. It also made me hesitate in case I would be disappointed, but fear not, it surpassed my expectations. I anticipated it to be funny and cute, as most cozy stories are, but the depth and wholesomeness of it took me by surprise.
Gam Gam is the sweetest; she brightens everything around her. With such a strong character it might be expected that she eclipses her companion, but Mina is just as awesome.
Mina has powers of her own, but she’s still learning to control them. For such a young age, she is determined and strong, and her fears are realistically depicted.
I felt the resolution a little abrupt, but it’s about the journey and not the destination. A Necromancer Called Gam Gam is a moving exploration of grief and found family wrapped in beautiful prose. It also made me want to get back into knitting, but the weather here doesn’t justify it.
CW: grief, death, death of parent, child death, murder.

About Indie Ink Awards:
Books by marginalized authors, self-published books, and books by small presses often get overlooked. The Indie Ink Awards is a unique event that brings together the writing community to celebrate books that have made an impact on us. This is our way of highlighting the future we want to see in books–by uplifting those that shine.
All awards are segmented into two categories: Best-In and the Writing The Future We Need awards. The “Best In” awards should exemplify the chosen category. We are looking for exceptional inclusion and diversity in works nominated for “Writing the Future We Need” awards.
