Summary
Temerity works in her family’s tavern along her mother and a goblin they’ve nicknamed Half-pint who helps them in exchange for cream. Her father and brothers have left to become adventurers in the Dragon’s Game, coming back sparingly to visit. Not many women get into the Game, but Temerity has always dreamed of the adventure it offers. Temerity is a newbie in the Game, but Half-pint has the experience she lacks, and going through the Game Temerity discovers how little she knows of her life-long acquaintance.

Review
LitRPG is not a genre I would’ve picked up if it wasn’t for the author. In the first half we get classic grinding quests with interesting (and sometimes cunning) NPCs. We also get a look at how the first “zones” and equipment work. In the second-half of the book there’s plenty of low-stakes action. In my case, I tend to lose focus with long action scenes, hence why I enjoyed the beginning more.
Temerity’s decision of getting into the Game was selfish and rash, and even when she frequently feels bad about leaving her mom by herself she still doesn’t regret it. It would be interesting seeing her mom’s reaction when she comes back and what has happened outside in her absence.
There’s lot of strategy involved in succeeding in the Game, and Half-pint is the mentor ready to guide Temerity in the ins and outs. I liked Half-pint calling her out in her hubris and prejudice.
Other characters become more prominent later on, but they failed to feel irreplaceable, like in the case of Temerity and Half-pint.
Some elements I liked were the glimpses of the legendary Dragons, who control and alter the game at their own volition, and the power-ups in the shape of jewels for which each color enhances a different skill.
Check this if you’re in the mood for a gaming-inspired cozy adventure with mysterious lore and lots of action.
CW: blood, violence, injury.
