Summary
Going through a tough time, a retail worker throws the towel on womanhood. An alien prince gives up his responsibilities and runs away on his sentient spaceship.
The concept of gender euphoria was my lodestar, a promise that being trans wasn’t just about what felt wrong, but also what felt right.
Review
This novella seized me from the first few pages with the depiction of how performative gender roles get to be.
It’s told in a dual POV: alien prince Cornelius, and an unnamed character referred as “She”. I usually don’t enjoy contemporary SFF, but the snarky tone and characters of the retail worker storyline made me prefer it. The connection between stories isn’t spelled out for you and, in the end, I felt something was missing from the prince’s part.
As a transmasc person, I thought this an accurate depiction of gender exploration and the exit from womanhood. The author aced the audiobook narration.
This is a powerful metaphorical tale of gender exploration and the journey to gender euphoria. With prose just as beautiful as the cover, Pluralities is a must-read for anyone who’s looking for a take on the trans experience not focused on gender dysphoria and the “born-in-the-wrong-body” narrative.
CW: transphobia (microagressions), (social) gender dysphoria, blood.
