Wyrd and Wonder. Five cozy fantasy books.

We’ve reached the last of the Fantastic Fives of Wyrd & Wonder! Last week I had fun finding five characters in their comfort zone and we’re closing the month with five of my favorite cozy fantasy books. I enjoy silliness in my life and in my books, so you’ll find plenty of it in the following recommendations.

Follow the hosts of the event: Annemieke (A Dance With Books), Ariana (The Book Nook), Jorie (Jorie Loves A Story), Lisa (Dear Geek Place), and Imyril (There’s Always Room For One More).

Howl’s Moving Castle, by Diana Wynne Jones

I actually read this one for last year’s Wyrd Wonder when they organized a read-along for it, I just didn’t participate in the discussion and got way behind. I still managed to finish it though and I loved it.

A Necromancer Called Gam Gam, by Adam Holcombe

This was a recent read for me and since it was for a contest I can’t share my review yet, but there’s a beautiful message of found family and loss. There’s an amazing old lady who knits garments for the dead she raises and an extraordinary girl who finds her while running for her life.

Tress of the Emerald Sea, by Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson opened his “Year of Sanderson” with this marvelous novel, for which I believe he honed his prose skills. It features an unconventional heroine who collects cups going on an adventure to save her beloved. The author recommends it for fans of The Princess Bride, do with that as you will.

Sir Thomas the Hesitant and the Table of Less Valued Knights, by Liam Perrin

It’s been a while since I read this book but it took me by surprise in a good way. It’s full of adventure, ludicrous depictions of familiar characters of Arthurian legends, evil aristocrats, a Black Knight, a magical talking weapon, and plenty of shenanigans.

Small Miracles, by Olivia Atwater

My last spot is for SPFBO 8 winner Small Miracles. A genderfluid fallen angel trying to tempt a woman into sinning a little. Galadriel will have to be more creative when her weapon of choice (chocolate) isn’t working for human Holly Harker. I’d love to read more of Galadriel’s adventures, but this book is a standalone.

I enjoyed working on these lists and I hope I helped you find a new favorite. I may be done with Wyrd & Wonder for this year, but the month isn’t over and there are many others still participating in the event so make sure to check them out.

As promised in my Q1 Update, I’ll be celebrating the blog’s anniversary with guest posts from indie authors during the month of June. Make sure to subscribe to not miss anything as I’ll be posting more frequently in the upcoming weeks.

Howl is such a great book. I’ve been seeing mentions of A Necromancer called Gam-Gam. I’m pretty curious about that one now.

Thank you! Yes, do it. It’s a novella so you can squeeze it in for a free afternoon.
