Since I can never have enough of Michelle Franklin and her loveable characters, I brought her back for an express interview about her acclaimed new series: Loveable Monster Holiday. These books are written and illustrated with a children’s audience in mind, but they’re equally enjoyed by adults (yes, I’m an adult even if I don’t act like one).
The last installment, Dragons Don’t Celebrate Passover is out today! It’s full of the charm that characterizes the series and even comes with colouring pages. Order your copy.

Interview
I know you wanted a Werewolves + Hanukkah book and decided to write it yourself, but where did the idea spark from?
I was looking for fantasy holiday books to show people, and lo, I found almost nothing. I joked over Twitter that I was going to be the one to write these books, and two weeks later, my friend Jonathan Burrello and I had finished Werewolves Don’t Celebrate Hanukkah.
What has been the best part of working with illustrator J. Burrello?
I don’t really have to tell him much. He comes up with the illustrations and covers mostly by himself. I give him a general idea of what I want, but he has his own ideas, and they’re always fantastic. He has a gift for expressions and over exaggerated characters, and everyone enjoys his art.

What have you found that children enjoy the most about these books?
That they’re surreptitiously educational. Because they’re humorous, children aren’t much aware that they’re also learning, and that’s the way to do it: trick ‘em with facts.
What’s the secret to Loveable Monster Holiday being loved by people of any age and religious background?
The sense of laconic awareness that tradition is what we make it. I don’t mention deities or religiosity. I just focus on the communal aspects of the holidays, and I think that’s what makes them enjoyable.
Lastly, what’s next for the series?
We have Vampires Don’t Celebrate Shabbos and Orcs Don’t Celebrate Christmas almost finished, but each subsequent book in the series is funded all by people on Patreon. If you would like to see more books in this series, join us at Patreon and support these books for as little as 2$.
We hope you enjoy Dragons Don’t Celebrate Passover! Chag Sameach!
